Josh McDaniels: Tom Brady had 'pages-long' strategy notes before Patriots games.(乔什·McDaniels:在爱国者队的比赛中,汤姆·布拉迪在比赛前有“长篇大论”的战略笔记。)

Tommy McDaniels said that the more he played, the more he understood what he liked and what he didn't like. It certainly became a huge back-and-forth for us. He had emails that were pages and pages long of things that he liked and things that he didn't like. We had to take all of it into account and figure out exactly what was the right blend of things for that week's game against that team.

While in the NFL, this is hardly the norm, certain quarterbacks have earned the right to have an active role in strategy. McDaniels includes several current quarterbacks in that tier. He believes that when you have a quarterback like Brady, Pat Mahomes, Josh Allen, or Lamar Jackson, who have had tremendous individual and team success, they earn the right to give their input, and you need to take that input into account and figure out how to best utilize it.

McDaniels served as New England's offensive coordinator for two stints (2006-08 and 2012-21), after being an offensive assistant for five seasons (2001-05). Brady's 23-year NFL career arguably peaked with McDaniels as his offensive coordinator in 2007. That season, Brady threw for an NFL-best 4,806 yards and 50 touchdowns, posting a league-best 117.2 passer rating and 68.9% completion percentage. The Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season before losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

Overall, Brady led the NFL in passing yards three times (2005, 2007, and 2017) and passing touchdowns twice (2007, 2015) with McDaniels either as his offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. The Patriots finished in the top 10 in scoring every season where Brady was under center and McDaniels was their offensive coordinator.

After an underwhelming first season without Brady, the Patriots rebounded in the 2021 regular season, earning an AFC wild-card berth with rookie quarterback Mac Jones. McDaniels has also won four of his six Super Bowls with the Patriots as either their quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator (2004, 2014, 2016, and 2018).

After being fired during the second season of both head-coaching stints with the Broncos and Raiders, he isn't currently on an NFL coaching staff. However, he has a long history of working with Bill Belichick and the Patriots, having also served as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2012 to 2016.
